Conference Overview
Health Care Reform promises to change health care in America for both consumers and providers. How will it change your practice and the family planning field? Stay until the end of the 23rd annual Contraceptive Technology Conference and you'll find out as you hear Dr. Michael Policar, the go-to expert when it comes to how policy affects hands-on practice. Leading up to his must-hear presentation is an exciting agenda of need-to-know management updates on contraceptives and a variety of GYN conditions and problems. We give considerable attention this year to hormonal contraceptives, covering new formulations, efficacy, bleeding problems and other side effects, and non-contraceptive benefits (off-label, too!). As always, we provide insight into how to manage the tricky problems you'll see first thing back in the office on Monday morning—pelvic and vulvar pain, vaginitis, HPV, PCOS, and sex questions.
Our speakers will bring you the state-of-the-art, as well as the controversial, practice tips: from the latest developments in long-acting reversible methods and how today's key study findings guide pill management, to those touchy issues in adolescent contraception, HIV transmission, and whether there might really be a connection between contraception and mood disorders. You won't want to miss the STI Update Preconference, focusing on the highlights of the new STD Treatment Guidelines. And where else will you learn about the more off-beat dilemmas you frequently encounter? Tattoos and piercings, the real low-down on Vitamin D, Omega-3, and other supplements, and discerning any significant difference among the myriad of combined pill formulations.
If this is your first Contraceptive Technology conference, we welcome you to join us and the other attendees, many of whom have come to a dozen or more of these conferences over the years. If this is your twelfth, seventh or third conference with us, we look forward to seeing you again and to having great conversation about the clinical challenges you face. Everyone has the opportunity to engage with the authors of the eponymous reference, Contraceptive Technology, and with the leading clinicians and researchers we've invited to present.
Last, and most critical, we guarantee that your conference experience will run seamlessly. Production value counts when you are investing limited funds and, even more, limited time. We look forward to seeing you at the year's best national family planning conference!

Preconference B
Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)
Wednesday, March 9
Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC), including IUCs and implants, meet the needs of many women for high efficacy against unintended pregnancy, convenience, low side effect profiles, non-contraceptive benefits and patient acceptability. In spite of this, clinicians are often reluctant to recommend these methods due to myths and misconceptions related to medical eligibility and potential short and long-term effects. Join our esteemed faculty panel at this Preconference and learn the latest evidence related to LARC, including the pharmacology, medical eligibility criteria, managing side effects and their use postpartum and during perimenopause.
This Preconference will enable you to:
- Discuss the pharmacology of the LARC methods.
- Identify the non-contraceptive benefits of LARC.
- Describe management of bleeding and other possible side effects patients may experience.
- Explain why LARC is a good option for postpartum and perimenopausal women.
- Explore LARC management through case-based discussion.

San Francisco … one of the most fascinating, cosmopolitan and romantic cities in the world. There is so much to see and do -- explore Fisherman's Wharf with the frenetic energy of fishing boats, street performers and artists. Watch the African penguin feeding at the Steinhart Aquarium, the oldest grand municipal aquarium in America. Pier 39 is an extravaganza of shops and restaurants, where you'll be amazed at the antics of hundreds of sea lions frolicking and basking in the sun. From here you can hop on a cable car and take in sweeping views of the bay, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.
You won't want to miss Golden Gate Parkand its gem, the de Young Museum, a state-of-the-art facility that integrates art, architecture and the natural landscape and showcases priceless collections of American art and special exhibitions. The neighborhoods of San Francisco offer a special look at the city's ethnic identities. Spend some time in Chinatown where fish markets, tea and herb shops and exotic produce stalls spill onto the street, or North Beach, the Italian quarter, where you can join locals at an outdoor café for espresso and pastry or wander in and out of the tempting delis, bakeries and pasta houses. For an amazing view of the city's landscape, hike up Telegraph Hill to Coit Tower.
Your trip to San Francisco would not be complete without a shopping spree and this city offers many opportunities for that! From the delightful boutiques of Unionand Chestnut Streets to the designer shops on
Union Square, you will not be disappointed.
Evenings in San Francisco are beyond compare as you explore the variety of restaurants, clubs, and theater offerings. After dinner, head to trendy SoMa, the "see and be seen" club scene where you can duck into a club too cool to post its name above the door or dance at one of the warehouses reworked to stage live music. Or head back to North Beach and take in Beach Blanket Babylon, the quirky, entertaining and riotously funny musical revue of San Francisco.
