Conference Overview
As OB nurses, have you wondered what happens to critically-ill infants after they leave the delivery room? As NICU nurses, have you examined a mother's medical history to better understand the infant's clinical picture? As clinicians in two distinct but interconnected specialties, you've worked side-by-side as your obstetric patients' critical needs turn into neonatal urgent interventions. Now you will have the opportunity to learn together to better provide coordinated and comprehensive care for your high-risk patients.
We invite you to the Obstetric and Neonatal Nursing: Challenges and Controversies conference to investigate issues that crossover between the obstetric and neonatal worlds as well as topics specific to practice dilemmas in each clinical area. State-of-the-art technology and procedures, ethical concerns, patient safety and the human factor are just a sample of issues addressed. Join us to broaden your awareness of how these factors interact and how to use this knowledge to ensure the best possible outcomes for both mothers and babies.
Highlights of the 2011 conference include:
- Preconferences specific to each specialty:
- For neonatal nurses, Advanced Neonatal Pathophysiology can be utilized as an excellent review and to advance your knowledge to the next level.
- For obstetric nurses, High-Risk Obstetrics and Clinical Emergencies focuses on managing crisies situations to maximize outcomes.
- Main Conference presentations addressing issues which affect both maternal and neonatal health.
- Substance abuse, viability and the late preterm infant -- three hot topics presented from both the maternal and neonatal perspective.
- Flexible Concurrent Session format -- choose to attend sessions with either an obstetric or neonatal focus.
- Opportunity to gain new insights, share experiences and problem-solve with your colleagues.
- Dynamic interactions with leaders in the care of high-risk obstetric and neonatal patients via case review and group interactions.
- New conference location -- The Paris Hotel -- right on the Las Vegas "Strip"! Enjoy easy access to major attractions and renowned entertainment.
Join your colleagues for an educational experience that will help you think critically, plan effectively and practice safely in your clinical setting. Re-energize yourself to do the work you know and love!

Preconference A
Advanced Neonatal Pathophysiology
This two-day preconference will provide a comprehensive review of neonatal pathophysiology for NICU nurses, nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists who are interested in increasing their knowledge base and understanding of the neonate. Course content will provide an overview of the various organ systems as well as address the physiologic basis of disease states seen in the neonate. Although clinical and management correlates will be mentioned during the presentations, the primary focus will be on understanding pathophysiology in neonates.
This Preconference will enable you to:
- Recognize the pathophysiologic basis of neonatal disease states and clinical conditions.
- Discuss the inter-relationship between various systems in critically ill infants.
- Improve assessment skills and evaluate treatment strategies relative to physiologic principles.
